The Ultimate Guide to Visiting the Amalfi Coast, Italy

Welcome to the Amalfi Coast, one of the Mediterranean’s most breathtaking travel destinations. This stretch of coastline in southern Italy’s Campania region offers dramatic cliffs, beautiful beaches, charming towns, and mouth-watering cuisine.

Our ultimate guide will walk you through everything you need to know to make the most of your trip, from the best cities to stay in to the must-visit attractions and delectable foods.Ready for an Adventure?

Let's get started Best Cities to Stay In and Visit

1. Positano:  Known as the jewel of the Amalfi Coast, Positano is recognized worldwide for its colorful cliffside homes and picturesque beaches. The town's steep, winding streets are lined with fashionable boutiques and seaside cafes, making it a favorite for both relaxation and adventure.

2. Amalfi:  The town that gives the coast its name, Amalfi, is rich in history. The Amalfi Cathedral, a 9th-century Catholic Cathedral, stands as a testament to the town’s medieval past. Wander through the historic center and dip your toes in the crystal-clear waters at Marina Grande beach.

3. Ravello:  Ravello is often described as one of the most beautiful towns on the Amalfi Coast. Perched high above the sea, it offers incredible views and lush gardens like those at Villa Rufolo and Villa Cimbrone. The annual Ravello Festival is also a major highlight, drawing music and art lovers from around the globe.

4. Praiano:  For a quieter experience, consider staying in Praiano. Set between Positano and Amalfi, this charming village offers beautiful beaches like Marina di Praia and a more laid-back atmosphere. It’s an excellent choice for those seeking a peaceful retreat.

5. Sorrento:  Although technically not part of the Amalfi Coast, Sorrento is a great base for exploring the region. Known for its lemon groves and sweeping views of the Bay of Naples, Sorrento also provides easy access to nearby attractions like Pompeii and Capri and is closer to Rome and Naples.

Top Activities and Experiences

1. Beach Days:  The Amalfi Coast offers several stunning beaches where you can unwind and soak up the sun. Some of the must-visit beaches include:Spiaggia Grande (Positano): A bustling beach with plenty of lounges and umbrellas to rent.Marina Grande (Amalfi): Known for its soft sand and excellent restaurants along the promenade.Fiordo di Furore: A hidden gem nestled within a natural fjord, ideal for adventurous swimmers.

2. Hiking Trails:  Nature enthusiasts will love the hiking trails that wind through the cliffs:Sentiero degli Dei (Path of the Gods): This world-renowned trail offers unrivaled views and connects Agerola to Nocelle.Valle delle Ferriere: A tranquil walk through lush forests and waterfalls, leading to a beautiful nature reserve.

3. Boat Excursions:  Embark on boat tours to get a unique perspective of the coast. Whether you opt for a private boat rental or a group tour, this is an excellent way to explore hidden coves, grottos, and picturesque villages from the sea. A boat trip to Capri is highly recommended to witness the awe-inspiring Blue Grotto.

Best Foods and Beverages to Try

1. Seafood:  The cooking along the Amalfi Coast focuses heavily on fresh seafood. Sample dishes like Spaghetti alle Vongole (spaghetti with clams) or Fried Calamari.

2. Lemon Delights:  The region's lemons are famous, and local dishes often incorporate this zesty fruit. Try a refreshing Lemon Sorbet or the iconic Limoncello liqueur.

3. Delizia al Limone:  This lemon-flavored sponge cake topped with lemon custard is an Amalfi Coast specialty.

4. Pasta:  Savor regional pasta dishes like Scialatielli ai Frutti di Mare, a homemade pasta served with fresh seafood.

5. Local Wines:  Pair your meals with local wines such as Falanghina or Lacryma Christi from Mount Vesuvius.

Getting Around the Amalfi Coast

  • By Car:  While renting a car provides flexibility, be prepared for narrow, winding roads and limited parking.

  • Public Transport:  Public buses operated by SITA are a cost-effective way to travel between towns, though they can be crowded during peak season.

  • Taxis: For a more convenient, if pricier, option, taxis are readily available throughout the coast.

  • Boats and Ferries:  Ferry services provide an enjoyable alternative to road travel. Companies like Travelmar offer routes connecting Positano, Amalfi, and Salerno.

  •  Private Driver:  Taking a private car will save you time and hassle of driving on winding and narrow roads, finding parking and where to stop for pictures, restaurants, etc..

Final Tips for Your Visit

1. Best Time to Visit:  Plan your trip during the shoulder seasons (late spring or early fall) to enjoy pleasant weather and fewer tourists.

2. Wear comfortable shoes: Be prepared for lots of walking on the hilly cobblestone streets, stairways and paths.

3. Work with an experienced Italy Travel Advisor: They can can design a custom itinerary based on your goals, budget and time to maximize your vacation experience.

Arguably the Catalyst for My Wedding
My (now) husband and I booked an Alaskan cruise with Dan in the summer/fall of 2014. He did such an amazing job that we decided to make that trip our honeymoon, and planned the wedding around that cruise! No question was too trivial, no detail left to chance. Dan thoroughly communicates with his customers, and his follow through is excellent. I have, and continue to, recommend Dan without reservation.
